About Prof Charbel Sandroussi
Dr Sandroussi graduated with honours from the University of Sydney in 1999. He undertook General Surgical training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. During his surgical training, he successfully completed a Masters in Medical Science at the University of Newcastle. Following the completion of General Surgical training he undertook sub-speciality training in Upper Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Transplant surgery. He spent 2 years in Australia and 2 years in Toronto, Canada obtaining the highest level of training in – Complex oncological resections including in-vivo liver isolation and cold perfusion for liver resections. Vascular resection during tumor extirpation and laparoscopic liver and pancreas surgery. – Liver, pancreas and kidney transplantation surgery including adult and paediatric live donor liver resection. – Advanced laparoscopy for biliary, obesity, hernia and adrenal surgery. – Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and ERCP.
Whilst in Toronto he gained accreditation in Liver, Pancreas and Kidney Transplantation from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS). He also gained accreditation in hepatobiliary surgery from the American Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Association (AHPBA). Dr Sandroussi was appointed as a consultant surgeon to the Departments of Hepatopancreaticobiliary, Uppergastrointestinal and Transplant Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 2010 and he is a visiting medical officer at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, East Sydney Private and the Mater Hospital. He was made a Clinical Associate Professor of the University of Sydney in 2013. During the year he was made Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Since this time the department has expanded with the appointment of 2 new surgeons, and multiple senior and junior surgical trainees. The unit has an active multidisciplinary unit with approximately 1000 patients reviewed each year, to ensure the best management of their complex cancers.
Dr Sandroussi is one of the highest volume cancer surgeons in NSW, undertaking 60-70 pancreatic, 80-100 liver and 40-50 oesophagogastric resections per year. He is happy to provide an opinion on cancers that are difficult to remove surgically or those which may require resection and reconstruction of major blood vessels.
In addition to cancer surgery he undertakes a large number of operations for benign diseases of the gallbladder (300 cholecystectomies per year) and hernias (100 per year). Dr Sandroussi’s research interests include vascular resection and replacement during liver and pancreas surgery, evidence based surgery, neoadjuvant treatment, surgical decision making, oncological surgery in frail patients and live donor liver transplantation. He is a co-director of the Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOuRCe) at the University of Sydney, and the Director of Clinical Research the the RPA Insitute of Academic Surgery (RPAIAS). He is a member of the Scientific advisory committee for PANCARE.
